Just two hours from Marrakech, the Amizmiz Valley reveals a side of Morocco most travellers never see β€” intimate, unhurried, and strikingly beautiful. This solidarity day trip invites you to explore a preserved landscape while directly supporting the people who call it home, as they rebuild their lives after the devastating earthquake of 8 September 2023.

Morning Hike Along the Amizmiz River

Your day begins when Said β€” a native guide with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the valley β€” leads you onto the trail. Almost immediately, the scenery takes hold: the Amizmiz River winds through dense thickets of oleander and fragrant fig trees, their scent mingling with the cool Atlas air. It is the kind of landscape that invites you to slow down and simply breathe.

As the path climbs, panoramic views open across the valley, framed by the blue-tinged ridges of the High Atlas. The hike is rated intermediate, lasting around 3.5 hours with a few exposed sections that look more dramatic than they are. A highlight for many is the pine forest near the upper stretch of the trail β€” its resinous fragrance is a genuine surprise, evoking the south of France more than North Africa.

Honey tasting at a local beekeeper

The hike ends at a local beekeeper’s home for a tasting of raw High Atlas honey, drawn straight from the hives. It is about as farm-to-table β€” or rather, hive-to-palate β€” as it gets: wildflower honey with a depth of flavour that no supermarket jar can replicate.

The pine forest smells like the south of France. A few sections have exposed drops β€” nothing impassable, but the kind of thing that makes the view from the top feel well earned.

Lunch at a Berber Home: The Best Tajine of Your Trip

After the morning’s exercise, you are welcomed into Said’s family home for a generous, home-cooked Berber lunch. A tajine that has been simmering since dawn, fresh salads, warm bread from a traditional clay oven, and mint tea poured from a height: this is Moroccan hospitality at its most genuine. Expect to leave full, happy, and quietly certain that no restaurant in Marrakech’s medina could match it.

Afternoon: Traditional Pottery with Brahim

The afternoon belongs to Brahim, a traditional potter who has practised his craft in the village for decades. In his small workshop, he shapes clay with a speed and ease that makes the whole thing look effortless β€” right up until you try it yourself. The pottery wheel is humbling, joyful, and surprisingly meditative. Brahim is patient, good-humoured, and entirely unsurprised when the pot you attempt resembles something abstract. Consider it a souvenir in the making.

Β Tourism That Rebuilds

The earthquake of 8 September 2023 devastated the Al Haouz region. Said, Brahim and hundreds of other families are still living under tents while they wait to rebuild.

€40 donated per bookingOn top of their normal pay, every day trip booked generates a direct €40 donation split between Said and Brahim β€” a transparent, human contribution to reconstruction. Here, travelling is a way of helping.

Practical Information

The experience includes return transport from Marrakech, a guided hike with Said (approx. 3.5 hours, intermediate level, some vertiginous but manageable passages), a honey tasting at a local beekeeper, a home-cooked Berber lunch, and an afternoon pottery workshop with Brahim. The day ends with a drive back to your hotel in Marrakech β€” with the strong suspicion that this was the highlight of your trip.

An authentic, meaningful, and unforgettable day in the Moroccan High Atlas.
