Mountains in the Morning, Desert by Dusk — The One-Day Amizmiz Trek & Agafay Tour

Most people think you need a week to see Morocco’s landscapes. You don’t. In a single day, starting and ending in Marrakech, you can hike to 2,100 metres in the Atlas and eat dinner under stars in the desert. I’m Hassan — local guide, Amizmiz resident — and this is the day trip I’m most proud to run.

What this day actually looks like

We start early. I pick you up from Marrakech and we drive 60km south on the Amizmiz road — the same road the locals take to the Tuesday souk, not the tourist highway. By the time the city noise fades, the mountains are already filling the windscreen.

Amizmiz sits at 990 metres. That’s where we lace up and start moving.

The trail heads north out of town toward Tizgui village. It’s not a dramatic cliff path. It’s the kind of track where you pass a shepherd with his flock and exchange “Labas?” — a Darija greeting that opens more doors than any guidebook phrase. The ascent to Ait Tirghit at 2,100 metres is steady. You’ll feel it in your legs. You’ll also be too distracted by the view to care.

Up top, the Atlas opens in every direction. No fence, no viewing platform, no gift shop. Just the mountain and silence.

We eat lunch here. Fresh Moroccan bread, olives, local cheese, mint tea in a thermos. Food always tastes better at altitude — that’s just a fact.

The descent runs through Tidli village at 1,200 metres. There’s a waterfall. Keep your phone in your pocket until you’re standing in front of it — it earns the photo.

Total trekking time: around 5 hours. Moderate difficulty. If you can walk uphill for 90 minutes without stopping, you can do this.

Then we drive east to the Agafay Desert.

The Agafay isn’t the Sahara. It’s a rocky, lunar plateau about 30 minutes from Marrakech — and in the late afternoon, with the Atlas Mountains still visible behind you, it’s one of the most disorienting and beautiful places in Morocco. You’ve already been at 2,100 metres today. Now you’re at 600, watching the light go flat gold across the stones.

Camel ride as the sun goes down. I won’t oversell it — it’s slow, slightly awkward, and completely worth it. Then dinner under a canvas tent: harira, tagine, pastilla if you’re lucky, traditional music. The kind of evening that ends with strangers feeling like old friends.

I drive you back to Marrakech. You arrive tired in the best possible way.

Practical tips before you book

  • Best months: March–May and September–November. Summers can be hot on the trail; January and February are cold at altitude but stunning if you’re dressed for it.
  • What to wear: Layers. The mountain summit is always cooler than Marrakech. A light windproof jacket takes up no space and matters a lot at 2,100m.
  • Footwear: Proper hiking boots or trail shoes. Not trainers. The descent through Tidli is rocky.
  • What to bring: 2 litres of water minimum, sunscreen, sunglasses, a small backpack. I take care of the rest.
  • Fitness level: Moderate. No technical climbing. You need to be comfortable walking uphill for sustained stretches. If you have knee or joint concerns, message me first and we’ll talk through options.
  • Meeting point: I pick you up directly from your riad or hotel in Marrakech. Departure is early — usually between 7:00 and 8:00am depending on season.
  • How to book: Message via visitamizmiz.com or DM @visit_amizmiz on Instagram. I reply fast.

If you only have one day in Morocco and you want to actually feel the country — not just photograph it — this is the day. Mountains, villages, a waterfall, a desert sunset, and dinner under the stars. All within 60km of Marrakech.

Have you done both the Atlas and Agafay in the same day before? Drop a comment and tell me what surprised you most — or send me a DM on @visit_amizmiz and let’s plan yours.
