The Day Trip from Marrakech That Actually Shows You Morocco

Hikers on a High Atlas trail near Amizmiz on a day trip from Marrakech Morocco

by hassan Dahmane

Most people spend their Marrakech day trip in a minibus, stopping at a waterfall for 20 minutes and calling it “nature.” This is different. An hour south of the city, the mountains take over. The trails are real. The lunch is in someone’s home. And by the time you get back to Marrakech, the medina feels like a different planet.

That’s what a day trip from Marrakech to Amizmiz looks like — and it’s the excursion I get asked about most.

What This Day Trip Actually Looks Like

You leave Marrakech in the morning. By 9:30 you’re in Amizmiz, at 1,000 metres, lacing up your shoes while the Atlas Mountains sit in front of you like a wall.

From here, everything depends on how much you want to walk.

The Full Day (5–6 hours of hiking)

This is the one for people who want to earn the lunch. You start climbing toward the village of Tafgart — about an hour of steady incline through terraced fields and mule tracks. At Tafgart, you stop for tea with an Amazigh family. Real mint tea. Sit down, breathe, take it in.

Then you push on. The trail rolls over a couple of hills, passes near Ait Ahmed, and drops down into the valley toward Sllamt (1,250 metres). You arrive around 1:15pm, see the village, and sit down to lunch — tajine, bread, the works — with a local family who’s been expecting you.

The return leg is mostly flat or downhill. You pass beautiful villages across the valley — Tizgui, Ait Ouskri, Sidi Hssain — and you’re back in Amizmiz by 5pm, Marrakech by 6pm.

The Moderate Option (3–4 hours)

Same start, less vertical. You hike to Sidi Hssain — a village named after a local saint whose tomb draws pilgrims from all over Morocco. It hosts one of the biggest festivals in the region once a year. Lunch with a family there, then a gentle walk back via Tamazirt and Takouit. Back in Marrakech by 5pm.

A donkey can be arranged for children or anyone who needs it. No shame in that — it’s how the locals move too.

The Easy Version (minimal walking)

You take a taxi from Amizmiz to Tafgart. Morning tea with a family. A short walk around the village. Then on to Sidi Hssain for lunch. Taxi back. In Marrakech by 5pm.

This option is for families with young kids, anyone with mobility considerations, or people who simply want the cultural experience without the physical challenge. It’s still a real day. It’s still Morocco.

Practical Tips Before You Go

  • When to go: October to April is ideal. Summer (July–August) is doable but hot — start early and drink more water than you think you need.
  • What to wear: Cover your legs and shoulders. Long trousers for everyone. Shorts are fine for men in summer. Good walking shoes — not sandals.
  • What to bring: Small daypack, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, any medication you might need (the guide’s kit is basic). A small gift for the host family is a lovely touch — school supplies, biscuits, a soap — but never expected.
  • Photos: Take plenty, but ask before pointing a camera at anyone. Some people don’t want to be photographed. A simple gesture goes a long way.
  • Public displays of affection: Don’t. Villages aren’t cities. It makes the host family uncomfortable and closes doors that would otherwise be open.
  • How to book: Head to visitamizmiz.com or send a message to @visit_amizmiz on Instagram. A few days’ notice is appreciated, especially for the family lunch arrangements.

One More Thing

People often ask me what surprised them most about this day trip. The answer is almost always the same: the hospitality. You walk into a stranger’s home in the mountains and they feed you like you’re family. That doesn’t happen in a souvenir shop or a rooftop restaurant.

It happens out here.

If you’ve done a day trip from Marrakech before and felt like something was missing — this might be what you were looking for.
